Subjects for HSC: How to Choose with Confidence and Purpose

Nov 3, 2026 3:15 PM

Choosing your subjects for HSC is an important step in your journey through senior school. For Year 10 students, it can feel exciting, but also overwhelming: Which subjects should you choose? What will give you the best ATAR? Will your choices affect university or career opportunities?

The answer begins with knowing yourself. Your HSC years are an opportunity to discover your strengths, pursue your interests, and develop the confidence to shape your future. While university prerequisites and the ATAR matter, your subject choices should also foster curiosity, resilience, and a genuine love of learning.

At OLMC, we encourage every student to approach HSC subject selection as an opportunity to take ownership of her learning and prepare for a future with purpose.

Understanding NESA Rules and HSC Unit Requirements

Before considering individual subjects, it is important to understand the basic HSC unit requirements.

Under the NSW HSC structure, students generally complete at least 12 units in Year 11 and at least 10 units in Year 12. To be eligible for the HSC, students must satisfactorily complete the required pattern of courses, including at least two units of English. Courses must also meet NESA requirements, including the rules governing Board Developed Courses and other eligible HSC courses.

If you are aiming for an ATAR, there are additional considerations. UAC calculates the NSW ATAR using the best 10 eligible units: the best two units of English plus the best eight units from your remaining courses. You must also have completed courses across at least four subject areas.

These requirements provide the framework, but they should not determine your entire decision. The most important question is which combination of Year 11 and 12 subjects NSW will allow you to learn, grow, and perform at your best.

How to Choose the Right Subjects for HSC

There is no single combination of subjects for HSC that is right for every student. Instead, consider three important questions when deciding how to choose HSC subjects.

1. Pursue Your Genuine Interests and Passions

You will spend a significant amount of time studying your HSC subjects, completing assessments, and preparing for examinations. Choosing subjects that genuinely interest you can make that commitment more meaningful.

Think about the subjects where you naturally want to ask questions, solve problems, create, investigate, or understand more. Perhaps you love analysing literature, exploring human behaviour, understanding the natural world, or solving complex mathematical problems.

Interest does not guarantee a particular result, but sustained engagement can help you approach learning with greater motivation and persistence.

2. Play to Your Academic Strengths

Look honestly at your learning so far. Which subjects have you performed consistently well in? Where have teachers identified particular strengths? What types of assessment do you enjoy?

Your Year 9 and 10 results can provide useful evidence, but they are not a fixed prediction of your HSC performance. You will continue to develop considerably throughout Years 11 and 12.

When considering your choices, look for the intersection between what you enjoy, what you are capable of doing well, and where you are prepared to invest sustained effort.

3. Map Your Choices to University Prerequisites and Career Goals

Some university courses have prerequisite subjects or recommended studies. If you already have a particular pathway in mind, investigate these requirements before finalising your choices.

The UAC Steps to Uni for Year 10 Students guide provides comprehensive information about university prerequisites, assumed knowledge, recommended studies, and additional selection criteria.

However, you do not need to have your entire career mapped out at 15 or 16. Give yourself room to explore. Choose subjects for HSC that keep appropriate pathways open—and look into opportunities like academic scholarships—while allowing you to develop as a learner and as a young woman.

Scaling of HSC Subjects Explained: What Does It Really Mean for Your ATAR?

Scaling is one of the most misunderstood parts of choosing senior courses. You may hear students asking about the best HSC subjects for high ATAR or trying to predict how the scaling of HSC subjects will impact their final rank.

The reality is more nuanced.

UAC explains that scaling is designed to allow students who have studied different combinations of courses to be compared fairly. Scaling is recalculated each year based on the overall performance of the cohort taking that course, meaning historical scaling patterns do not guarantee what will happen in your specific HSC year.

This is why choosing a subject simply because you believe it will scale well can be risky. UAC specifically advises students to base course choices on their interests, demonstrated abilities, and the value of the course for their future plans rather than trying to manipulate scaling mechanics.

When looking at HSC scaling explained clearly, the takeaway is simple: scaling is part of the ATAR calculation, but it should never be the primary strategy behind your subject selection.

There is no shortcut to achieving strong academic results. Exploring past cohort achievements in our HSC results publications shows that a subject you are genuinely interested in, understand well, and are motivated to work hard in will always provide a much stronger foundation than a subject chosen purely because of its historical scaling.

Your ATAR is important for some pathways, but it is not a measure of your worth, your potential, or the contribution you will make beyond school.

The OLMC Approach: Holistic Support and Academic Care

At Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta, subject selection is part of a broader approach to student growth and holistic student wellbeing.

OLMC's contemporary senior curriculum is student-centred and designed to support each young woman to achieve her best both in the classroom and beyond. The College's Careers Counselling and Pathways Team provides tailored guidance around HSC subject options and tertiary qualifications, ensuring students prepare with clarity for further study, work, and life after school.

This support means students do not have to navigate these decisions alone. Families can consider academic strengths, interests, future pathways, and personal aspirations together, supported by informed guidance every step of the way.

At the heart of a Mercy Education is the belief that achievement and character belong together. Your HSC journey should help you become a confident learner, compassionate leader, and young woman ready to use her gifts with purpose.

Choose Your Subjects for HSC with Confidence

Your HSC subject choices are an important beginning, not a final definition of who you will become. Take the time to understand the requirements, explore your interests, consider your strengths, and investigate future pathways.

Most importantly, choose with confidence and purpose.

At OLMC, we are committed to helping young women embrace their potential and prepare for life beyond the classroom.
