Pastoral care

Pastoral CarePastoral Care at OLMC is an integrated process of education and skill building that is based on relationships and affirmation. Consequently, it is supportive and celebratory, preventative and esteem building. It is firmly believed that the level of performance of students is improved by a positive approach to learning and by quality relationships both inside and outside of school.

Providing all students with the kind of environment that will best nurture and support their development and learning is a continuing commitment for all at the College. Student management is practiced as a whole school approach and is based upon respect for self, respect for others and respect for proper use of authority. It involves listening, acceptance, apology and forgiveness

The formal Pastoral Care Program at OLMC aims to provide all the students with opportunities which foster confidence and competence in directing their personal, social and spiritual development. It helps develop in the students an acceptance of themselves as worthwhile people and an awareness of the ability to shape their own lives.

As a result of participating in some of the structured Pastoral Care activities at OLMC the students should:

  • demonstrate responsibility and reliability through such things as the Leadership Program, the Peer Support program, Volunteer Week and fundraising activities.
  • be able to set their personal goals at any time through participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and other outdoor education camps.
  • develop their own decision making techniques through engagement in co-curricular activities; participation in drug education initiatives and subject choices.
  • communicate effectively, both formally and informally, through debating, public speaking, oral presentations in class and camp concerts.
  • be better able to understand and manage feelings and emotions through participation in retreat programs and reflection days; by understanding the Anti-bullying program and taking part in the protective behaviours workshop.

OLMC Merit Award System

The Merit Award System is designed to allow all students the opportunity to consistently have their academic effort, positive attitude towards uniform, cocurricular commitment and good behaviour specially recognised as being an integral part of class and College life. Students are awarded Merit Codes for their efforts and not just their natural abilities. Merit Codes are awarded to students by staff through the College diary system. The information and record of Merit Codes is provided in every student’s diary (pages 16-17). When a student is awarded five merit codes they are eligible for a Merit Certificate. Merit Certificates are cumulative over a student’s entire time at the College. An accumulation of Merit Certificates can lead to Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards over time. This whole process involves greater public recognition of the student’s positive contribution to the College.
